Polychromed Wood Santo/Bulto Figure

Mexican or South American, late 18th or early 19th C.  These figures were typically carved, then covered with gesso before painting, a process which originated in Italy and Spain and influenced artisans  in their Colonial settlements.  This figure is unusually well carved and is fitted with glass eyes which give the figure a more realistic appearance.
