Miniature Portrait of Young Revolutionary War Officer Jonathan Sellman, By Charles Willson Peale. Watercolor on ivory 1-1/4" x 1-3/4", in the original gold locket case.
Price: $39,000
Jonathan Sellman (1733-1810), entered the Revolution in June, 1776, as a second lieutenant in the Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp. He held a captaincy by the end of the year, and was a major at the time of his retirement in April, 1783. As his miniature shows but one epaulette on the left shoulder, it must have been painted while he was still a subaltern, before his promotion of December 10, 1776. (excerpted from Portraits and Miniatures of Charles Willson Peale, by Charles Coleman Sellers, 1952, p. 192.) See also p. 261.
