Born near Paris, Adam lived most of his life in the port city of Le Havre.  In 1886 he was enrolled into the Corps of Painters Official de La Marine of the Department de la Marine and became their official painter.  Adam's ship portraits and marine scenes often included a local background, giving us the geographical context for the paintings.  His works are displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco, and The Penobscot Museum in Searsport, ME.
