Cast Zinc Cigar Store Figure of an Indian Chief, circa 1873, by William Demuth, 208 Broadway, New York City.
In the decade following the Civil War, Wiliam Demuth had the original idea to case zinc cigar store Indians from original wood examples. He felt that the zinc would last longer and require less upkeep than their wooden counterparts which were often displayed outside tobacconist shops and exposed to the weather continually.
This figure has been repainted, but the original casting is in perfect condition (no damage). Overall height 76".
We have a copy of the original rare Demuth catalog showing this figure.
Price: $29,000 KR-68-31
