Fire Marks were prominently displayed on the exterior fronts of buildings as proof of fire insurance coverage.  See Footprints of Assurance by A. E. Bulau.

European Fire Mark, issued by the Phoenix Assurance Company Limited, of London.  See p. 153, Footprints of Assurance.  Painted on copper.  The emblem of the Phoenix Bird is legendary.  This one is shown rising form the flames.
