Xanthus Russel Smith (American 1839-1929), marine, landscape and portrait painter, son of Russel Smith, was born in Philadelphia. He studied medicine at University of Pennsylvania from 1856-1858, during which time he also began exhibiting landscapes at the Philadelphia Academy and the Royal Academy in London. During the Civil Was, he saw active service in the South and painted many land and sea battles. After the war, he devoted himself chiefly to marine and landscape painting until his later years when he turned to portrait painting.
