Carved Walnut Mirror

Carved and Stained Diminutive Walnut "Trompe L'Oeil" Mirror, 19th C., probably French.  Wonderful example, excellent detail.  Replaced glass.  Size:  16-3/4" x 13-1/4"

"Trompe L'Oeil" is a French idiom that translates "deceive the eye."  The technique uses such pictorial or carved elements as perspective, foreshortening, shadows, etc., to render objects in paint or inlay so that they appear to be three-dimensional.
